[00:25.34]China is no Stranger to the dangers of floods. But in this she is not alone.
[00:33.59]Others too have hadto learn to live with the possibility
[00:39.24]that the gentle river on their doorstep
[00:43.60]may one day reach out to grab them, turning their lives upside down.
[00:52.53]THE NIGHT THE RIVER CAME IN by William Hendrux
[00:58.88]Dan Dykstra stood next to his 11-year old daughter,Jennifer,
[01:05.54]his long arm wrapped round her shoulders,
[01:10.71]as they peered from their cabin on the Guadalupe River into the rain-filled darkness
[01:19.46](1) It had rained most of the day,
[01:23.44]swelling the southern Texas river beyond its banks
[01:29.50]But there seemed no need for concern
[01:34.15]The wood cabin sat on piles several feet above the flood plajn.
[01:41.41]"Looks like the worst is over,Jen,"said Dykstra at around 10p.m.
[01:48.46]"Let's go to bed."
[01:52.61]But Jen couldn't sleep.She trusted her Dad,
[01:58.49]but couldn't help recalling television images of floods and people clinging to treetops
[02:07.03]wet and cold. After a couple of restless hours, she started for the bathroom
[02:15.78]Stepping on the carpet she noticed it was damp.'
[02:21.22]She paused,listening intenly.What was that sould?
[02:27.38]It was odd like the sound of rapids.
[02:32.11]It was rapids! And they were rushing directly under the house.
[02:38.88]She ran to her father's bedside
[02:42.93]"Daddy,Daddy,"she cried,shaking him violently.
[02:48.18]"Wake up.There's water in the house!"
[02:52.93]Barefoot and wearing only shorts,Dykstra walked to the entry and opened the door
[03:00.30]What he saw shook him wide-awake
[03:04.97]Duchess,their dog,was standing just outside the door,
[03:10.93]her feet in six inches of water
[03:15.47](2)That meant the river had to be more than 400 feet beyond its banks,
[03:22.24]flooding the roadway, their only means of escape,
[03:27.67]They were trapped.
[03:30.31]The chill water lapped at his ankles.
[03:34.75]Quickly Dykstra pulled the dog inside the cabin and slammed the door
[03:41.41]Then he grabbed two life jackets."Put this on,honey,"he said to Jennifer.
[03:48.28]Dykstra looked around. The muddy water was inching up the woodpaneled walls.
[03:56.02]"What'll we do?"asked Jen,her voice shaking.
[04:01.87]"We'll be fine,"Dykstra replied, trying hard to conceal his own anxiety.
[04:09.03]"Let's go upstairs."
[04:12.50]They climbed up the ladder-like stairs to a loft above the living room.
[04:18.35]From there they could hear the water filling the room below
[04:23.78]creeping towards them.Windows exploded under the pressure.
[04:30.55]The television slammed against the wall.
[04:35.20]Suddenly the whole house trembled as if caught in an earthquake.
[04:41.16]Then it pitched violently upward
[04:45.83]before sinking several feet.My God,thought Dykstra.We're floating,
[04:54.69]Looking out from the window they could see that they were moving,
[05:00.12]the house being swept along by the river.
[05:05.08]Terrified that the cabin would sink, taking them down with it,
[05:10.80]Dykstra decided they would have to get out.
[05:15.98]Wrapping his arms tightly round his daughter,he plunged into the icy water.
[05:22.93]The cabin was behind them now, chasing them through the darkness
[05:28.67]Before he could get,out of its path,
[05:32.72]Dykstra found himself thrown against a submerged tree.
[05:38.47]An,instant later the cabin-pushed by the tremendouts power of the river
[05:45.13]pinned him to the trunk. His ribs were crushed. His left leg snapped. He screamed.
[05:53.91]Then his mind seemed to cut loose.
[05:57.85]Dykstra felt as if he were watching himself from far off
[06:03.91]He saw himself and Jen settling to the bottom of the river.
[06:09.48]He was surprised by the sense of peace that settled on him.
[06:14.62]I'm sorry,honey,"he said."I'm so sorry."And then he lost consciousness.
[06:22.98]As he did so the house shifted, releasing him and spinning away from them.
[06:30.06]Jennifer found herself drifting downstream, her unconscious father beside her.
[06:37.61]"Don't die, Daddy!"she cried. "Please!"
[06:43.46]Perhaps it was the sound of the little girl's voice that stirred Dykstra to consciousness
[06:50.41]He gave Jen's hand a gentle squeeze, and her heart jumped.
[06:56.60]In the pale moonlignt,Dykstra-
[07:00.65]now more alert-Spotted an island formed by some rubbish
[07:06.92]that had got caught in some treetops.
[07:10.97]Fighting against the current and his pain he swam towards it
[07:17.63]Jen climbed onto the small pile of timbers and pulled her father from the rushing water
[07:25.00]He collapsed in pain, shivering and fighting for breath.
[07:31.06]They were far from safe and Jen knew it.
[07:31.13]The rubbish could shift at any moment, plunging them back into the river
[07:37.79]She wanted desperotely to curl up in her father's arms,
[07:43.67]but that would only add to his pain
[07:48.34]Now,she realized,it was up to her to help him.
[07:53.70]Just then she was astonished to see a figure appear out of nowhere
[08:00.15]"Duchess!"she shouted, and the wet dog climbed up to join them.
[08:06.71]She took comfort in the pet's presence
[08:11.28]Every few minutes during the night Jen checked on her dad.
[08:17.21]"Think about warm things"
[08:21.65]she told him,"like coffee and fireplaces."She sang to him and prayed.
[08:30.19]Morning came, but still no sign of help.
[08:35.47]The hours dragged by Around midmorning
[08:41.42]an airplane flew almost directly overhead, but never slowed.
[08:49.16]Another passed by a couple of hours later
[08:55.09]then a third late that aftenoon.
[08:59.55](4)Each time,Jen jumped up,waving her arms and screaming
[09:06.61]And each time the plane disappeared over the horizon, taking her spirits with it
[09:14.55]As daylight faded,
[09:18.31]Jen found herself facing the likelihood that they would have to spend another long
[09:25.47]cold night on the island. Her father would not survive.
[09:32.41]And without him,she doubted if she could either
[09:37.69]The very thought collapsed all hope.
[09:42.42]"They're not going to find us,"she cnea out in despair."We're going to die."
[09:50.57]Just then a voice from somewhere on the distant hillside pierced the darkness.
[09:57.44]"Hello. Is someone out there?"
[10:02.69]Jen sprang to her feet. She shouted back loudly,"Hello. Hello."
[10:10.95]"We're going to get help,"the voice said."Just hang on."
[10:17.50]Jen knelt by her father's side and rubbed his back to keep him warm.
[10:24.95]"We"ll hang on together,"she told him.
[10:29.94]Later that night a boat was eventually able to edge its way through the darkness to reach them
[10:38.40]Eighteen hours after the cabin had been torn from its foundations and swept away
[10:45.85]Jennifer,her father and Duchess were pulled from their island and taken to safety
[10:54.20]No trace of their cabin was ever found.
