The 78-year-old represented the national side 25 times between 1964 and 1971 - he then went on to be a selector in 1983 before coaching the All Blacks to their first World Cup win in 1987.

New Zealand Rugby chief executive Steve Tew said in a statement Sir Brian is in relatively good health at the moment, and he will undergo treatment soon.

"While Brian and Pam are grateful and appreciate the support of their close friends, they have asked for privacy as they focus on his treatment and recovery," Tew said.

Sir Brian was knighted on June 7 1999.
