[00:35]But if by chance the professional sweeper is absent any morning, [00:40]the boy who has the genius of the future partner in him [00:43]will not hesitate to try his hand at the broom. [00:45]The other day a fond fashionable mother in Michigan asked a young man [00:49]whether he had ever seen a young lady sweep in a room so grandly as her Priscilla. [00:53]He said no, he never had, and the mother was gratified beyond measure, [00:59]but then said he, after a pause, [01:03]“What I should like to see her do is sweep out a room.” [01:06]It does not hurt the newest comer to sweep out the office if necessary. [01:10]I was one of those sweepers myself. [01:12]Assuming that you have all obtained employment and are fairly started, [01:16]my advice to you is “aim high”. [01:19]I would not give a fig for the young man who has not already [01:22]seen himself the partner or the head of an important firm. [01:25]Do not rest content for a moment in your thoughts as head clerk, or foreman, [01:30]or general manager in any concern, no matter how extensive. [01:34]Say to yourself, “My place is at the top.” [01:37]Be king in your dreams. [01:39]And here is the prime condition of success, the great secret: [01:43]concentrate your energy, thought, and capital exclusively upon the business in which you are engaged. [01:48]Having begun in one line, resolve to fight it out on that line, [01:53]to lead in it, adopt every improvement, have the best machinery, and know the most about it. [02:00]The concerns which fail are those which have scattered their capital, [02:04]which means that they have scattered their brains also. [02:08]They have investments in this, or that, or the other, here, there, and everywhere. [02:13]“Don’t put all your eggs in one basket” is all wrong. [02:17]I tell you “put all your eggs in one basket, and then watch that basket”. [02:22]Look around you and take notice; men who do that do not often fail. [02:28]It is easy to watch and carry the one basket. [02:31]It is trying to carry too many baskets, which break most eggs in this country. [02:37]He who carries three baskets must put one on his head, [02:40]which is apt to tumble and trip him up. [02:43]One fault of the American businessman is lack of concentration. [02:47]To summarize what I have said: Aim for the highest, never enter a bar room; [02:53]do not touch liquor, or if at all only at meals; never speculate; [02:59]never indorse beyond your surplus cash fund; make the firm's interest yours; [03:05]break orders always to save owners; concentrate; put all your eggs in one basket, [03:11]and watch that basket; expenditure always within revenue; [03:17]lastly be not impatient, for, as Emerson says, [03:22]“no one can cheat you out of ultimate success but yourself”.
