Broccoli

WHEN YOU WERE 6: That vegetable that kind of looks like a tree is disgusting.

AS AN ADULT: A member of the cabbage family, broccoli is an excellent source of vitamin A and C.

Spinach

WHEN YOU WERE 6: Ew. No matter how many cartoon characters eat this, you won't.

AS AN ADULT: Spinach is lovely and can be eaten cooked or raw. A mighty source of vitamin A, 100 grams of spinach has about 23 calories.

Coffee

WHEN YOU WERE 6: Yuck, that brown stuff my teacher drinks! Beg to have a cup too. Even after six lumps of sugar, it still tastes horrible.

AS AN ADULT: Need it for survival. Coffee has become your drug. While studies have linked coffee to protecting the brain and lowering risk of death, we also know it gives us that much-needed energy boost in the AM. (And also should not be consumed by children.)

Dark Chocolate

WHEN YOU WERE 6: The consolation prize when all the milk chocolate's gone.

AS AN ADULT: Anything over 70 percent cocoa makes you feel like a real, bill-paying adult.

Runny Eggs

WHEN YOU WERE 6: Slimy, slippery, and sometimes goopy.

AS AN ADULT: So, so lucky to have it sunny-side-up.

Eggplant 茄子

WHEN YOU WERE 6: Squishy, weird, why isn't the inside purple? Won't try. Won't try.

AS AN ADULT: A meaty vegetable, whoa. Low in calories (about 25 per 100 grams), eggplant also provides fiber.

Cauliflower 菜花

WHEN YOU WERE 6: AH! BRAINS!

AS AN ADULT: The kale of 2014, cauliflower is great for your liver and can help with digestion problems.

Fish 魚

WHEN YOU WERE 6: There are bones, skin and sometimes I feel like the fish is looking at me.

AS AN ADULT: We all know fish like salmon are rich in protein and healthy fats. Studies have linked oily fishes to increasing your brain size and preventing memory loss.

Spicy food

WHEN YOU WERE 6: Why would you eat something that hurts?

AS AN ADULT: Even when it burns, you keep wanting more.

Avocadoes

I cringe to think of the times I pushed slices of avocado to the side of my plate, wasting God's miracle fruit every time my mom made Mexican food or tossed it in a salad.

These days, avocado is an essential component of my daily diet. I feel incomplete without it in at least one of my meals, and for good reason. It's not only delicious, but it’s one of the healthiest fruits out there.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes were not allowed on my plate. I found them slimy and tart. Many kids don’t like tomatoes unless they are really sweet or turned into something more appetizing like ketchup. Even as an adult, I picked tomatoes off my salad.

Now, I love tomatoes and eat them every single day. Tomatoes are highly versatile and can be made into sauces, soups, entrees and even dessert.

Mushrooms

Mushrooms were also on my “don’t even think about it” list. I didn’t like how they looked, smelled or tasted. My mother would make mushroom gravy and I would carefully spoon the gravy onto my food trying to avoid any pieces of mushroom. Who wants to eat a fungus anyway?

When I grew up, I was like, “Who doesn't love mushrooms?” Most types of mushrooms are full of potassium and copper.
