Banks are charging women nearly 20 percent more in penalty fees, according to a new analysis of 205 million bank transactions on the investment app Stash.

In their survey of over 500,000 users, Stash analysts found that male users on their platform paid an average of $182 last year in fees, including overdraft and late payment charges, ATM surcharges and account minimum fees. Women, however, paid about $214 — 18 percent more — for the same sorts of transactions.

“The main reason we think this is happening is the [gender] pay gap,” Stash CEO and co-founder Brandon Krieg tells Bloomberg.

Women earn an average of $25 per hour to a man’s $32, according to a 2019 survey of 13 million employees via ADP Research Institute payroll data. With less cash in their bank accounts, Krieg says, women are more apt to overdraw and incur financial penalties.

“Financial disparities like these amongst men and women impact nearly every part of a woman’s financial life — it doesn’t start and end with the pay gap, but her retirement savings and even, as we’re seeing now, her likelihood to get hit with predatory banking fees,” Krieg tells CBS MoneyWatch.
