英語四級翻譯練習(xí)：廟會

廟會(temple fair)是中國一種傳統(tǒng)的節(jié)日活動。它源于古代人們的祭祀儀式(sacrificial ceremony)，逐漸演變成物品交流的集市和文化表演的場所。廟會一般在寺廟里或寺廟附近的空地上舉行。雖然各地舉辦廟會的日子有所不同，但活動內(nèi)容都差不多。老百姓從四面八方趕來，買賣物品、觀看表演、品嘗小吃。近幾年來，廟會已經(jīng)成為人們欣賞民間藝術(shù)和體驗傳統(tǒng)文化的首選之地。

The temple fair is a kind of traditional festival activity in China. It originated from the ancientsacrificial ceremonies and gradually evolved into a marketplace for people to exchange articlesand a place for cultural performance. The temple fair is usually held on the open ground in ornear a temple. Although temple fairs in different places are held on various dates, their activitiesare alike. People come from far and wide to the temple fair to buy and sell goods, watchperformances and taste snacks. In recent years, temple fairs have become a priority place forpeople to appreciate folk arts and experience traditional culture.

1.第2句中的“它源于……，逐漸演變成……。”可處理成一個并列結(jié)構(gòu)，譯作it originated from... andgradually evolved into...。翻譯“物品交流的集市”時，為了符合英語的表達習(xí)慣，宜增譯出施動者“人們”， 表達為 a marketplace for people to exchange articles。祭祀儀式還可譯為 ritual ceremony。

2.第3句中的定語“在寺廟里或寺廟附近的”較長，故將其處理成后置定語，用in or near a temple來表達， 兩個“寺廟”翻譯一個即可。

3.第4句中的“各地舉辦廟會”不可直譯為different places hold temple fairs，因為其實際意思是“在各地舉辦的廟會”，中心語是“廟會”，應(yīng)處理成主語，“各地”處理為介詞短語in different places，作后置定語修飾 “廟會”。“舉辦的”可處理成句子的謂語，用被動語態(tài)譯出temple fairs are held。“日子有所不同”處理成時間狀語，譯作on various dates，句子結(jié)構(gòu)明了緊湊。后半句的“活動內(nèi)容”即指“活動”，譯成activities即可， “內(nèi)容”可省去不譯。

4.倒數(shù)第2句中的“從四面八方趕來，買賣物品、觀看表演、品嘗小吃”中有四個動詞短語，后面三個可處理成并列結(jié)構(gòu),作“從四面八方趕來”的目的，故將“買賣物品、觀看表演、品嘗小吃”處理成目的狀語，用不定式短語譯出，表達為 to buy and sell goods, watch performances and taste snacks。
