新托福寫(xiě)作范文一:
High school teachers (teachers of students ages 14-18) spend most of class time lecturing (speaking) while the students listen and take notes. Other high school teachers spend most of class time on discussion and projects that students are highly involved in and exchange their ideas. Which of these two approaches do you think is more effective for student learning and why?
Although many prefer classes where teachers lecturing whole the class and students just taking notes, I on the other hand prefer discussion classes where students could be more involved and share their ideas. I will address the most discernible reasons as to why I fell this way in the following.
To begin with, “sharing ideas” and “lecturing” need some prerequisite, which means students need some preparation and spend some time to read about the topic before class. This means that they are expected have a basic idea about the class which they will attended, thus they will learn more efficiently. In contrast, when students addend classes absent-mindedly, teachers have to spend most of the class time to explain about the topic. My own experience is a compelling example of this. When I was a university student, my professors lectured all the time. I recall that at the beginning of the class all professors spent a lot of time explaining the basics of the courses and gave students introductions. But some professors of mine used discussion method, and because of that students read about the topic before the class from many different sources such as their textbooks or via internet. The result was amazing because the instructor could engage in the relevant topic immediately and build more upon it.
Moreover, when students exchange their ideas in class, they could minimize misunderstandings and could directly address their problems during discussion, which means that the teacher will have more time dedicating to teaching instead of answering their questions. For instance, my high school teacher used this method and many students found the answers to their questions through discussion with their fellow peers.
In conclusion, it is for all the aforementioned reasons, I firmly believe that high school teachers should spend their whole time on discussion and encourage students to exchange their ideas because students could attend classes with ideas in mind, and it also helps to prevent misunderstanding and maximize class efficiency.
新托福寫(xiě)作范文二:
The main duties of educators include facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values and habits. The frequently adopted teaching methods are instructing and organizing discussions and projects. In my opinion, the more effective way of teaching in high school is lecturing.
Admittedly, discussions and projects should be an indispensable part of the class.Discussion is one of the best ways for students to brainstorm, share ideas, provoke thinking and develop critical thinking. With teachers’ encouragement and enlightenment, students not only get inspiration from others but also benefit from their own in-depth analysis. Projects, undoubtedly, are also significant, as students try to discover and explore independently, which is the ideal way for teachers to help them find passion on the subject and cultivate research ability.
However, in high schools, no matter how important discussions and projects are for students, they should not be the dominant part of class, since teachers’ instruction is more effective at this stage. To begin with, through the traditional way of lecturing, teachers are able to impart more knowledge within the limited time in class. In high school, there are both compulsory courses, designed to help students to grasp basic knowledge for them to survive in society, and selective courses offered to encourage students to cultivate interests and explore potential. For many courses, there is much information, such as history and biology. By lecturing, teachers are able to cover more pages and explain more in details.
Secondly, for study of theories and concepts, high school students also need teachers’ instruction. At this age, teenagers with limited study experiences can hardly understand the abstract knowledge on their own. Even with a group to discuss together, they may fail and the discussion turns out to be a waste of time. They have to rely on teachers’ explanation. For example, it is way too challenging for high school students to understand and apply the formulas and functions in math without teachers’ help.
To sum up, the dominant method of teaching in high school should be lecturing, while discussions and projects play an auxiliary role.
