A: Are you reading about gossip again?
B: Hollywood gossip. What's wrung with that?
A: You should be studying, not reading rubbish.
B: I am studying, it's all about the history of Hollywood.
A: Sounds interesting. I know something about that. It's the movie capital of the world, the home of the "Silver Screen".
B:But before Hollywood was Hollywood,it was Rancho La Brea and Rancho Los Feliz. In 1886. H. H. Wilcox bought an area of Rancho La Brea that his wife then christened " Hollywood" .
A: He bought che area to make a place for rich mid-westerners to spend their winter holidays, not to make movies.
B: In 1911, the Nestor Company opened Hollywood's first film studio in an old tavern on the corner of Sunset and Gower. That's how it all began.
A: So. because of the new industry being created Hollywood would have to develop into more than just a small community. It wasn't long before nearly all the homes along the Boulevard were replaced by commercial buildings linking the three comers.
B: Right, people needed to work there. Also people need to have fun there, banks, restaurants, clubs and movie palaces sprang up during the 1920s and 1930s. They also need grand houses for the stars.
A: At this time movie stars actually lived in Hollywood? Of course nowadays they would get mobbed everyday if they lived there, so they moved out to Beverly Hills.
B: During the 1960s more and more businesses started to move out of Hollywood, and the nightclubs and bars moved to the west. Hollywood today is a diverse, vital, and active community striving to preserve the elegant buildings from its past.
A: But most of the movie industry is still there, right? But I guess the outward appearance of the neighborhood has changed. How are they protecting the buildings?
B:In 1985, the Hollywood Boulevard commercial and entertainment district was officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places. This will protect che neighborhood's important buildings so that Hollywood's past can be seen in the future.
A: Great !So when you 6nally have enough money to visit everything will still be there, just the way it used to be.
