今天的這段對話,在討論莎士比亞,

莎士比亞怎么這樣受歡迎?為什么有些人認(rèn)為這些戲劇并不是莎士比亞寫的

來聽今天的講解:

A: I've been reading Shakespeare's Romeo and Julier but I find it really tough going as the language is so difficult to understand.

我一直在看莎士比亞的《羅密歐與朱麗葉》,但我發(fā)現(xiàn)讀起來真的很困難,因為文字太難懂。

B: That's true for native speakers too. I know that when I read one of his plays I am always gjancing at the glossary and notes so that I can understand che words.

對本國人來說也是一樣難懂。我記得我讀他的劇本時也總是翻看詞匯表和注釋,這樣才能看懂詞匯。

A: So how did Shakespeare become so popular if people can't understand what he wrote?

那如果人們連他寫的東西都看不懂,他又怎么這樣受歡迎呢?

B: People in his time understand his plays because they were meant to be heard not read. It wasn't until seven years after his death that his plays were published in printed form.

莎士比亞那個年代的人們能明白他的戲劇是因為那些劇本是寫給人聽的而不是寫給人看的。他的戲劇在他死后7年才被印刷出版。

A: But I read somewhere that Shakespeare invented about 2, 000 new words. How did they understand these new words if they'd never heard them before?

但我看別的地方寫到莎士比啞創(chuàng)造了2000個左右的新詞。如果那時的人們以前沒聽過這些新詞,他們是如何理解的呢?

B: Well some nouns he used as verbs, as adverbs and as adjectives. He also created new compound words such as "baby-faced" and smooth-faced”. He also brought into common use words that had appeared in the last half of the 16th century.

是這樣,他把一些名詞用作動詞、副詞和形容詞。他還創(chuàng)造了一些新的合成詞,比如“生著娃娃臉的”、“臉上沒胡須的”。此外,他還把16世紀(jì)后半期出現(xiàn)的詞當(dāng)成普通的詞來用。

A: Perhaps it is the phrases he is most remembered for such as "To be or not to be, that is the question" and "Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?"

讓人銘記最深的也許是他的名句,如:“生存還是毀滅,這是個問題”,以及“羅密歐,羅密歐,你為什么是羅密歐???”

B: Perhaps my favourite is "the milk of human kindness" , but I'm sure everyone has their own favourite.

也許我最喜歡的還是”人性善良的乳汁”這個說法,但我相信每個人都有自己最喜歡的語句。

A: I know that some people don't think that Shakespeare wrote the plays. Why is that?

我聽說有些人認(rèn)為這些戲劇并不是莎士比亞寫的。為什么會這么說?

B: Primarily because he never went to university so some critics don't think that he received a higb enough education to be able to write such great literature.

主要是因為他從沒上過大學(xué),所以有些評論家認(rèn)為他沒有接受足夠的高等教育,也就寫小出如此偉大的文學(xué)作品。

A: So if Shakespeare didn't write them, who did?

那如果不是莎士比亞寫的,會是誰寫的呢?

B: Variuus candidares have been put forward but perhaps the best is Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford  ( 1550-1604 ) .

人們提出了很多個人選,但最可能的還是第17世牛津伯爵愛德華·德維爾(1550 -1604)。

A: Why is that?

為什么?

B: In the sonnets and the playsthcre are frequent references to events that are paralleled in Oxford's life. Personally. I agree with the majority of Shakespearean academics who think Shakespeare was the author.

十四行詩和戲劇巾不斷提及跟牛津生活相關(guān)的事。就我個人而言,我同意大多數(shù)的莎士比亞研究者的看法,認(rèn)為莎士比亞才是原作者。

A: Well "a rose by another name would still smell as sweet"?

嗯,“玫瑰換個名字聞起來還是一樣香”,是不是?

B: That's right. One thing is for sure and thac is that the world's greatest plays luve enriched the English Language ever since and his plays are among the finest literature the world has ever seen.

一點不錯!可以肯定的一件事就是,從此以后,達些世界上最偉大的戲劇作品大大豐富英語語言,莎劇被列入世界上迄今為止最優(yōu)秀的文學(xué)作品之列。
