A: I’m hungry, let’s go to lunch, my treat.
B: No, let’s go Dutch, we're both students.
A: I earn some extra bucks after class.
B: You’ve been here for only a few months, how could you find a job?
A: Not a job, but two jobs.
B: You’re really something.
A: I’m not so good as you say. Over two thirds of all Harvard students choose to do part-time jobs.
B: But you have two jobs all at once. Isn’t it tiring?
A: I have to push myself to do as many jobs as possible. I don’t want to lay all the burdens on my parents.
B: You‘d better take care of yourself, or your parents will be worried. Don’t be too hard on yourself.
A: I won’t. Although I want to do more jobs, I’m not allowed to do so. The university rules say that students may not work more than 20 hours per week while enrolled and 40 hours per week when classes are not in session.
B: I think the rule is reasonable. But where did you get the jobs? I want to do part-time jobs as well.
A: There is a Student Employment Jobs Database where students can find work information. I can find some information for you.
B: What types of jobs do you usually do?
A: It depends on whether you choose to work on campus or off campus. I only work on research assistants for faculty members, design websites for offices, and assist in science labs.
B: What about those who work off campus?
A: Off-campus work is equally varied with students serving as babysitters, tutors, webmasters, database developers, and special assistants. The work can be carefully designed to fit the needs, interests and skills of a student.
B: Where do those working off campus work?
A: Some jobs are nearby Harvard, others may be a little far. But all the jobs are done with the Cambridge and Boston,
B: Are all the students paid by the university?
A: It’s complicated, you know, there are on-campus, off-campus, Federal Work study Program or FWSP, and non-FWSP positions.
B: What’s FWSP?
A: It’s a federally funded program designed to create jobs for financially needy students to help them meet their educational expenses. But first you have to apply for financial aid. If you are offered financial aid, then you can have both FWSP jobs and non-FWSP jobs. If you fail, you can only have non-FWSP jobs.
B: What do students usually do on campus?
A: They may help in an office, shelve books in the library, assist in the dining halls, serve as
B: It really is complicated,
A: The procedure is not simple neither. After I was selected to work, I was required to complete a referral form with the Student Employment Office. Then the Office sent an email to my supervisor to confirm that I was authorized to work. After that I began to work.
B: What’s your hourly rate?
A: The current range for undergraduate students is $9,5?12.5.
B: That’s a good few bucks.
A: The point is I have to pay taxes. All earnings are subject to Federal, State, and Local taxes,
B: It’s your honor to do your duty as a taxpayer, Ha!
A: It is my honor if you’d like to go for lunch with me.
B: I’d love to. It’s for free, why not?
