Good morning,I'm Jake Seltzer,and this is"Hello America."

Today.Stamford is a city of big office buildings.It didn't use to be.
今天，斯坦福德是個滿是現(xiàn)代化寫字樓的城市。
Fifty years ago,it was a city of factories.
但過去不是，五十年前，這里到處是工廠。
At the Stamford Historical Museum,
在斯坦福德歷史博物館里
we looked at all the products that Stamford factories used to make.
我們看到了過去斯坦福德工廠生產(chǎn)的所有產(chǎn)品。
People used to call Stamford"The lock City"
人們過去稱斯坦福德為“鎖城”，
because this company-Yale & Towne Lock-had its factories here.

Yale used to employ four out of five people in this town...
當(dāng)時鎮(zhèn)上每五個人中就有四個人在耶魯上班...
The company could produce hundreds of looks in a day...

They could produce millions in a year.
一年能生產(chǎn)數(shù)百萬套。
You can't find a typewriter like this anyone,
現(xiàn)在你現(xiàn)也看不到這樣的打字機了，
but it used to be the most popular typewriter in the world.
但它曾經(jīng)是世界上最行的打字機。
And a Stamford company used to make it.
斯坦福德的一家公司過去就職生產(chǎn)這種打字機。
This is a postage meter.Pitney Bowes made the first one in 1919.
這是蓋戳機.皮特尼，鮑在1919年生產(chǎn)了第一臺蓋戳機。
A postage meter can stamp mail automatically.
蓋戳機可以自動為信件蓋上郵戳。
But before 1919,it didn't use to be so easy.
但在1919后以前，這項工作可不那么輕松。
They used to stamp letters by hand in those days.
那時候人們都是手工蓋戳。
Now they use postage meters.

Postal workers could stamp about a dozen letters in a minute with this machine.

Shaving didn't use to be so easy.

Back then,men used ot shave by hand.They couln't shave in a hurry...
那時，男人們手動刮胡子。他們刮不快...
Then,Jacob Schick invented the electric razor.
后來扎考伯.史克發(fā)明了電動剃須刀。
Today,men use electric razors,and they can shave quickly and easily.
現(xiàn)在男人們都用電動剃須刀，可以刮得又快又輕松。
The Schick factories used to be in Stamford,but they aren't here anyone.
史克工廠過去曾在斯坦福德，但現(xiàn)在不在這兒了。
Stamford workers used to make most of the world's glass tubes.
斯坦福德的工人們過去生產(chǎn)世界上大部分的玻璃管。
At Machlett Laboratories,glassblowers used to make thousnds of them every day.
在馬徹里特工廠，人們過去每天生產(chǎn)數(shù)千只玻璃管，
A good glassblower could make a glass tube like this one in fifteen minutes.
，一個好的玻璃管工十五分鐘能制作一個這樣的玻璃管。
But he couldn't work for more than three of four hours without a break.
但他們不能連續(xù)工作三、四個小時，
It was too hot,Now most-X-ray tubes are made by machines.

Stamford factory workers used to make all these products.
所有這些產(chǎn)品都是過去斯坦福德的工廠生產(chǎn)的。
Stamford used to be a factory town.
那時斯埂福德是個工業(yè)城。
Today,it is a corporate city with offices instead of factories.
現(xiàn)在則是一個辦公樓林立的商業(yè)中心。早已沒有昔日那種工廠云集的樣子了。
