1.Old Couple at McDonald’s
2.A little old couple walked slowly into McDonald’s one cold winter evening.
3.They looked out of place amid the young families
4.and young couples eating there that night.
5.The little old man walked right up to the cash register,
6.placed his order with no hesitation and then paid for their meal.
7.The couple took a table near the back wall
8.and started taking food off the tray.
9.There was one hamburger,
10.one order of French fries and one drink.
11.The little old man unwrapped the plain hamburger
12.and carefully cut it in half.
13.He placed one half in front of his wife.
14.Then he carefully counted out the French fries,
15.divided them in two piles
16.and neatly placed one pile in front of his wife.
17.He took a sip of the drink,
18.his wife took a sip
19.and then set the cup down between them.
20.As the man began to eat his few bites of hamburger
21.the crowd began to get restless.
22.You could tell what they were thinking.
23.“That poor old couple.
24.All they can afford is one meal for the two of them.”
25.As the man began to eat his French fries
26.one young man stood and came over to the old couple’s table.
27.He politely offered to buy another meal for the old couple to eat.
28.The old man replied that they were just fine.
29.They were used to sharing everything.
30.As the little old man finished eating
31.and was wiping his face neatly with a napkin
32.the young man could stand it no longer.
33.Again he came over to their table and offered to buy some food.
34.After being politely refused again,
35.he finally asked a question of the little old lady.
36.“Ma’am, why aren’t you eating?
37.You said that you share everything.
38.What is it that you are waiting for?”
39.She answered, “The teeth.”
