Superman appeared in his first comic book in 1938. At first the writers did not give him great powers. He was able to stop bullets, but he could be knocked down by a shell shot from a cannon. Within a few years, the writers decided to make him stronger. They gave him X-ray vision. Then they gave him the ability to fly. Today they have made him even stronger. Now he can even withstand the power of nuclear bombs.
