例如:
(1) It's well worth trying.
(2) I'm wide awake.
(3) She's fast asleep.
(4) We are much beholden to you for your help. (不能說(shuō)very beholden)
(5) He felt quite sure of the appointment.
(6) I'm much afraid of snakes.
它們可以和much或very much連用。
例如:
(1) The two brothers are very much alike.
(2) He is very much alive. 他非?;钴S。
2. 在過(guò)去分詞用作謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞時(shí)不可和very連用,要用much,very much或quite等說(shuō)明程度。
例如:
(1) The financial situation seems to be much/very much improved.
(2) Britain's trade position has been much/very much weakened by inflation.
(3)Ted was most surprised when he heard the news.
(1) a very frightened animal 一只極度受驚的動(dòng)物
(2) a very complicated problem 一個(gè)很復(fù)雜的問(wèn)題
(1) We were all very shocked by the news about Tony.
(2) I am very pleased to hear it.
The theory sounds quite convincing.
又如:不能說(shuō)very screaming(尖聲喊叫的),children必須使用像這樣的詞continually or loudly screaming children;singing birds也不可說(shuō)成very singing birds等等。
very只可能和已轉(zhuǎn)用為形容詞的現(xiàn)在分詞連用,例如:very interesting(很有趣),very exciting(非常令人興奮)等。
(1) His name is well up in the list.
(2) He was treated quite fairly.
動(dòng)詞也不和very連用,要用其他副詞,如much/very much和quite等修飾。
例如:
(1) I should much like to come.
(2) They closely resemble each other in appearance.
(3) By doing so you will greatly oblige us.
(4) He is well grounded in the English language.
