大多數(shù)美國人說時(shí)間都是先說幾點(diǎn),然后說幾分。例如:7點(diǎn)25分,英語是 seven twenty-five (7:25)。要把時(shí)間說得更清楚些,還要加上 a.m. (或 AM 或 A.M.)或 p.m.(或 PM 或P.M.)。a.m.(上午)是拉丁文 anti meridiem 的縮寫,p.m. 是 post meridiem 的縮寫。
美國人說日期通常先說月,后說日,最后說年。日期前的定冠詞經(jīng)常省略。例如:1992年5月20日的英語是 May 20th, 1992。
Conversation A : At Home in the Evening
EILEEN: Did you finish your work?
MARTIN: Yes, I did. Where are the children?
EILEEN: Sue is reading. Alan is dressing.

EILEEN: Sue wants to go to Jennifer's house tomorrow. She can go in the morning.
MARTIN: When is dinner?
EILEEN: You didn't eat lunch. Do you want dinner?

EILEEN: Dinner is at seven-thirty.
SUE: Hi. May I come in?
MARTIN: Of course.
SUE: Did you finish your work?

SUE: Can we go at six o'clock? I want to go to Jennifer's house.

SUE: May I phone Jennifer now?
EILEEN: No. It's time for dinner.

Practice 1:情態(tài)動(dòng)詞 may 和 can 在構(gòu)成疑問句時(shí),都用倒裝句型,移到主語之前,有時(shí)都可表示“可以”的意思,但 may 有“許可”的含義,can 有“能夠”的含義。
