BACKGROUND 背景

Two friends after work are deciding on what to do for dinner.
兩個(gè)朋友下班后正在決定吃什么晚餐。

A: I’m starving to death. What about you?
我餓死了。你呢？

B: Yeah, I’m starving too! Where do you want to have dinner?
我也是，我快餓死了。你想去哪兒吃？

A: I don’t know.
我不知道。

B: What do you feel like eating?
你想吃什么呢？

A: Every now and then I get hungry for spicy food.

B: There’s a really good Sichuan restaurant near here. Let’s go there sometime.

A: Why not tonight?

B: No, not tonight. You have to make reservations in advance. It’s a very popular place. Besides, it’s expensive. And I don’t have any money.

A: I’m broke, too. Let’s save our money and go next week.

be broke: be without money 破產(chǎn)；身無分文☆☆☆☆

Kim’s Note:
This is a very common expression, but it also is the cause of a very common error. I have met more than one Chinese person who has said they are “broken” instead of “broke”. There is really a big difference!

* I’d like to go to the concert with you, but I’m broke.
我想跟你一起去聽演唱會(huì)，可是我沒錢了。
* Every time I say I want to go out for dinner, my boyfriend says he’s broke.
每次我說要出去吃飯，我男朋友都說他沒錢了。
* You can’t be broke. We just got paid yesterday!
你不可能沒錢。我們昨天剛發(fā)了工資！

do without: live without something 沒有……也行☆☆☆
* If there’s not enough cream for the coffee we’ll do without.
如果沒有足夠的奶油放在咖啡里，那我們就這樣喝算了。
* Do you think you can do without seeing your family for so long?
你很久不見你的家人能行嗎？
* There are some things in life that I just can’t do without.

feel up to: feel about health or ability to do something
覺得能擔(dān)當(dāng)，感到能勝任☆☆☆☆
* I’m supposed to go to Jim’s party, but I just don’t feel up to it now.
我應(yīng)該去參加吉姆的派對的，但我現(xiàn)在覺得不舒服，不能去了。
