【step on someone's toe 功高震主】
step on one's toes 這個(gè)表達(dá)法,當(dāng)然可以表達(dá)字面上的意思“踩到(某人的)腳趾”,不過在使用上,step on someone's toes 更常用來表達(dá)員工很盡力表現(xiàn),甚至逾越到了本該是主管或老板的工作,掠人之美而讓在上位者面子不保,意思就猶如中文里的“功高震主”。
A: You'd better watch out, or you'll step on your boss's toes.
你最好注意一點(diǎn),否則你會(huì)把老板的面子都搶光了。
B: I'm just trying to do a good job and get everything finished on time.

這個(gè)表達(dá)法是從玩“彈珠”marbler 的游戲衍生而來的,游戲可能只是玩好玩的,但有的人是本著認(rèn)真的心情,贏了彈珠就是要自己留著,沒有兒戲的成分。運(yùn)用在競爭激烈的商場或是有輸贏勝負(fù)的情況,play for keeps 就是指“爭出個(gè)你死我活”。
