Donald Trump has lashed out at Steve Bannon, alleging that his former chief strategist and close ally had “lost his mind” after Mr Bannon was quoted accusing Mr Trump’s son of treason for meeting a Russian lawyer during the election campaign.

“Steve Bannon has nothing to do with me or my presidency,” Mr Trump said in a statement issued by the White House press office. “When he was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind.”

He added: “Steve pretends to be at war with the media, which he calls the opposition party, yet he spent his time at the White House leaking false information to the media to make himself seem far more important than he was. It is the only thing he does well.” Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House press secretary said the president was “furious [and] disgusted”.

The public rift came as incendiary excerpts emerged from a new book about the Trump White House which looks certain to inflame tensions between Mr Bannon and the president’s family. Mr Bannon left the White House in August to return to running Breitbart News.

Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House is written by Michael Wolff, a journalist, and based, the author says, on hundreds of interviews with members of Mr Trump’s administration and inner circle, as well as conversations with the president himself.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House press secretary, hit out at the book on Wednesday, alleging that it “is filled with false and misleading accounts”. However, the book appears to have hit a nerve.

In it, Mr Bannon is quoted accusing the president’s eldest son of “treasonous” behaviour. This refers to his taking the Trump Tower meeting with a Russian lawyer during the 2016 election campaign, according to The Guardian, which secured an advance copy of the book.

The comments attributed to Mr Bannon suggest that Robert Mueller’s special counsel investigation poses a more serious threat than many in the White House claim, and that Mr Trump’s eldest son and his son-in-law could be central targets.

Mr Wolff writes that Mr Bannon described a meeting that Donald Trump Jr took with a Russian lawyer at Trump Tower last June as “treasonous”, according to The Guardian. He says Mr Trump Jr should have alerted authorities that Moscow was offering “dirt” on Mr Trump’s opponent Hillary Clinton.

“Even if you thought that this was not treasonous, or unpatriotic, or bad sh*t, and I happen to think it’s all of that, you should have called the FBI immediately,” Mr Bannon reportedly said.

According to the account, Mr Bannon also said he expected Mr Mueller to focus on money-laundering allegations as a way to target people close to Mr Trump and to create a path towards the president.

“Their path to f***ing Trump goes right through [former Trump campaign manager] Paul Manafort, Don Jr and [Mr Trump’s son-in-law] Jared Kushner,” Mr Wolff reportedly quotes Mr Bannon as saying. “It goes through Deutsche Bank and all the Kushner sh*t . . . They’re going to roll those two guys up and say play me or trade me.”

Mr Bannon also reportedly said that US authorities would “crack Don Junior like an egg on national TV”.

A spokeswoman for Mr Bannon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Tom Barrack, a billionaire who is close to Mr Trump, denied a report in the book that he had described Mr Trump to a friend as “not only crazy [but] stupid”. The account was “totally false,” Mr Barrack told the Financial Times. He added that he had “inordinate respect” for the president.

Mr Trump told the New York Times last week that he expected Mr Mueller’s probe to be fair and White House lawyers have insisted that they expect it to wrap up quickly. Yet the investigation continues to hang over the White House.

On Wednesday, the two founders of Fusion GPS — the research firm behind a sensational Trump Russia dossier that emerged last January — published an op-ed in the New York Times. They denied that the report which their firm had commissioned had triggered the FBI’s own probe into Mr Trump’s ties to Russia.

“The intelligence committees have known for months that credible allegations of collusion between the Trump camp and Russia were pouring in from independent sources during the campaign. Yet lawmakers in the thrall of the president continue to wage a cynical campaign to portray us as the unwitting victims of Kremlin disinformation,” the founders, Glenn Simpson and Peter Fritsch, wrote.

The dossier was put together by Christopher Steele, a former MI6 agent and paid for by the Washington Free Beacon and Hillary Clinton’s campaign, they said. The allegations it contains remain unsubstantiated.
