The British-Canadian initiative was supported by countries including France, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Finland, Portugal and New Zealand, as well as the US state of Washington and Canadian provinces such as Ontario and Alberta.
All pledged to phase out coal-fired power plants, though several countries have already said they will reach the 2030 target earlier. The UK, for example, is committed to ending the use of coal power by 2025.
“Coal is not coming back,” said Catherine McKenna, the Canadian minister for environment and climate change. “The economic case is clear. The price of solar and wind has plummeted. Clean power is also increasingly the cheapest power.”
The pledge stands in marked contrast to the position taken by the Trump administration, which has vowed to expand US use of coal and generate more coal-mining jobs.
The initiative, which hopes to include at least 50 countries by next year, was formally unveiled at the UN climate change conference in Bonn, Germany. Scientists and researchers have long argued that the global effort to combat climate change requires radical steps to lower the use of coal.
