The Hong Kong-listed group is seeking to buy out both British Land and Canada’s Oxford Properties for £1.02bn, said a person close to the discussions. They are joint-venture partners in the building.
If completed, the deal, first reported by CoStar News, will be one of the largest Chinese purchases of UK property. It would highlight a trend of Chinese capital flowing into real estate around the world.
The 225m-high Cheesegrater, officially called the Leadenhall Building, was completed in 2013 by Rogers, Stirk, Harbour + Partners. It broke records for rents in the City of London when it was let to mainly insurance-linked companies.
Its sale is being closely followed as an indicator of the health of Britain’s property market after the country’s vote last year to leave the EU. That caused an immediate drop in real estate prices.
British Land said that it and Oxford Properties, which each own 50 per cent of the building, were “in advanced discussions regarding the possible sale of their interests in the Leadenhall Building . . . It is not certain that these discussions will lead to a sale”.
CC Land said: “We do not comment on market rumours.”
