President Barack Obama warned yesterday that too few African Americans were turning out for early voting as Donald Trump gained on Hillary Clinton in both national and swing-state polls.
The black vote was “not as solid as it needs to be”, Mr Obama told a nationally syndicated radio show that is popular with African Americans as he sought to rally voters by telling them his legacy was on the line.
The plea came six days before the election as three of the four latest polls showed Mr Trump and Mrs Clinton neck and neck, suggesting that voters have become wary of the Democrat since her email scandal returned to the headlines. Mrs Clinton now has a lead of just 1.9 points in the average of recent polls compiled by RealClearPolitics, down from 7.1 points in mid-October.
The shift in the race has unnerved investors, who had been betting on a Clinton victory, sparking the longest slide in the US stock market in five years and sending investors into less risky assets such as US government debt and gold. The Vix, an index of expected US market volatility known as Wall Street’s “fear gauge”, has risen to highs last seen after the UK’s vote to leave the EU.
Democratic concern about black voters — who helped catapult Mr Obama to victory in 2008 and 2012 — comes amid signs from the swing states of North Carolina and Florida that African Americans are turning out in lower numbers than the Clinton campaign had hoped. While Mrs Clinton was not expecting to secure the same number of black supporters as the man who became the first African American president, she needs as strong a turnout as possible.
