Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton engaged in sharp attacks in the first debate of the 2016 election, with the Republican property developer painting his rival as a “typical politician” and the Democratic former secretary of state portraying her opponent as unprepared for the “awesome, immense responsibility” of the presidency.

Mrs Clinton castigated Mr Trump for not releasing his tax returns, which every presidential candidate has done since Richard Nixon. She questioned his reasons for not releasing them, speculating that he may have exaggerated his wealth, that he may not have been as charitable as he claims or that he may be trying to disguise how much tax he pays.

“Maybe he does not want the American people to know that he has paid nothing in federal taxes,” Mrs Clinton said. When she pointed out that the only tax returns that Mr Trump has made public showed that he had not paid any federal taxes, he responded: “That makes me smart.”

Mr Trump in turn upbraided Mrs Clinton over her email scandal, saying he would release his taxes “as soon as she releases her 30,000 emails” that were deleted before the Federal Bureau of Investigation started probing her use of a private server.

The 90-minute debate showcased the two candidates’ very different styles. Mr Trump started in a more restrained manner, suggesting that he planned to approach the debate in a less confrontational manner than he employed in the Republican primary debates. Later, however, he grew visibly irritated when Mrs Clinton launched pointed attacks, painting her rival as someone who “stiffed” small business people.

When she accused him of fuelling racism by propelling the conspiracy theory that President Barack Obama was not born in the US, Mr Trump returned fire, saying her aides had done the same thing.

“When you try to act holier than thou, it really doesn’t work,” Mr Trump said.

Mr Trump renewed his attack on the Federal Reserve, which he has repeatedly accused of being in cahoots with the Obama administration by keeping interest rates low. “This Janet Yellen of the Fed . . . The Fed is being more political than Secretary Clinton,” he charged.

He claimed not only that the US economic recovery had been the weakest in modern times, but that the country was now in “a big, fat, ugly bubble”, leaving it vulnerable when rates began to rise.

A snap poll of 1,000 debate watchers from Public Policy Polling found 51 per cent thought Mrs Clinton had won, 40 per cent thought Mr Trump came out on top and 9 per cent were unsure. Mrs Clinton gained several points in betting markets such as PredictIt.

Mr Trump hailed his plan to cut corporate tax rates from 35 per cent to 15 per cent as "a job creator like we haven’t seen since Ronald Reagan”. Mrs Clinton said her economic plans focused on fairness and promoting “broad based, inclusive growth” while Mr Trump was offering “trumped up trickle down” economics that would only help the rich.

The first of the three debates began as polls show Mr Trump and Mrs Clinton effectively neck and neck with 43 days until the election on November 8. While the latest Bloomberg poll gave Mr Trump a two-point advantage over his opponent, Mrs Clinton maintains an average lead of 1.6 per cent, according to a compilation of recent polls by Real Clear Politics.
