In the first round of the French Open, defending Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova lost the first game to Australia's Ashleigh Barty but rallied to win, 6-1, 6-2.

In the French Open’s first shocker, Serena Williams lost in the first round of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career, falling 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3 to France’s Virginie Razzano. Razzano came into the tournament at Roland Garros ranked No. 111 in the world; Williams, seeded fifth, has won 13 major championships.
