Tourists in Peru probably only know Macha Picchu or Lake Titicaca, but forget that, deep in the Amazon jungle, there is another mysterious wonder.

The vast world is always full of surprises, and one of those is this river which is full of boiling water, making tourists and also scientists in Peru struggle to find answers. Since ancient times, news about this river of death has been spread among the indigenous people, some of which claim to have found the river, and consider it a miracle.

The boiling river in Peru lies at the extreme east of the Huánuco Region, near the border with the Ucayali Region. This river of death is a small branch of the Pachitea River. The Pachitea River itself is a small tributary of the giant Ucayali River, one of the main sources of water flowing into the Amazon River. The boat that takes Peruvian tourists to the upper reaches of the river full of boiling water usually comes from the small border town Honoria, about 3 hours by car from Pucallpa, the nearest major city.

Travelers wishing to visit the river of death in Peru should look for an experienced guide, as the area is quite remote and inaccessible. Long-distance excursions and trekking to the river will also often depart from Pucallpa city. If you want to take part in a traditional healing ceremony at Mayantuyacu or another local center, be sure to contact your calendar in advance as volumes are limited and often require a reservation several weeks in advance.

If you are determined to visit the river of death in Peru, then rest assured, this magical place will surely overwhelm you with mother nature and her amazing mysteries.

The indigenous name of the river of death is Shanay-Timpishka, which translates as "Where the Sun Burns" in the Asháninka dialect. According to today's research, the water's temperature is below 100 ° C - not hot to boil, but certainly hot enough to kill any organism that would venture into it.

Since ancient times, the river of death has always been considered a place full of strength and spiritual significance. It is said that in the past, indigenous residents were afraid to enter this area because of fear of unjustly and cannibalism. Only the strongest mages dare to enter. Today, this mysterious river becomes the oldest and most famous center of spiritual healing in the region, named Mayantuyacu ("water and air").

Maestro Juan Flores, the mage of Mayantuyacu, is a member of the Asháninka clan and comes from a long lineage of wizards. According to him, the local people believe that the hot water is gushed out from the giant snake god Yacumama - the mother of Water, symbolized by a snake-head rock located on the upper reaches of the river. Although the surrounding area was quite devastated due to logging, but the area of the river is still preserved.

Many Peruvian tourists every year make a journey deep into the jungle, cross the mountain road to Mayantuyacu to immerse themselves in ancient healing methods. These methods include drinking a hallucinogenic tea called ayahuasca, as well as taking leaf-based pills and other herbal remedies.

Not only curious visitors, many scientists also want to decode Shanay-Timpishka's secret. And the most famous is probably the geologist Andres Ruzo, who is determined to go to the end of the truth. As a child, he heard stories about the boiling river in Peru from his own grandfather, who grew up nearby.

When growing up and pursuing the path of scientific research, Ruzo began to be skeptical of the childhood story and determined to seek answers. After consulting with other family members, he was able to pinpoint the location of the river of death in Peru, and made a trip into the woods to see it with his own eyes. What he discovered was the river in the legend of his childhood: a river with boiling water existed, a place so hot that any animal that unfortunately fell into it was instantly boiled.

With his geological knowledge, Ruzo believed that the geothermal in the surrounding area had to be very high in order to heat an entire river. It is estimated that the temperature is even higher than an active crater. Finally, after years of being forgotten by world science, finally, the mystery of the river of death was finally explained by Mr. Ruzo himself.

When it rains in the Amazon rainforest, water soaks into the honeycomb-structured sedimentary rock. Due to the influence of the Earth's geothermal influence, rainwater will be heated, forming a hot spring-like flow to the Shanay-timpishka river.

However, Ruzo's explanation has not satisfied scientists. And the Shanay-Timpishka river is still a mystery, attracting a large number of tourists and Peruvian people alike. Not only is it taking a vacation, making the soul calm, this is also a journey to the sacred area, seemingly only exists in mythology.
