Earlier on Tuesday officials had said the Indonesian military had spotted several objects floatingin the sea near the last point of contact with the AirAsia aircraft.AirAsia confirmed the debriswas from QZ8501 and said it was found in the Karimata Strait, about 110 nautical miles southwest from Pangkalan Bun.

Six bodies had also been found in the sea by search and rescue teams lowered fromhelicopters and warships, with three — two women and a man — retrieved by Tuesday night, anavy spokesman said. Strong winds and high waves led to the suspension of the air rescueoperation, but naval warships continued to work through the night. A team of divers was beingsent to aid in the search.

The aircraft, an Airbus A320-200, was carrying 155 passengers, two pilots, four cabin crewand an engineer.

“It’s unlikely to be engineering-related,” said Neil Hansford, chairman of Strategic AviationSolutions, an aviation consultancy based in Australia. “It’s how the human factors are appliedwhen the weather-induced event happened — how was that handled and what are the results?”

Earlier this year, AirAsia began rolling out satellite communications systems on its Airbus A320sthat would make aircraft easier to track by emitting signals every few minutes. However, theupgrade had not been applied to flight QZ8501.

The jet’s engines, made by CFM International, a joint venture between General Electric andFrance’s Safran, did not have a tracking system that relays real-time engine diagnostics andlocation back to the manufacturer. Such tracking systems are more typical on long-haul flights.
