Michael Flynn, Donald Trump's national security adviser, is facing mounting pressure over claims he may have broken the law by discussing US sanctions against Russia with a Moscow official before the US president's inauguration.

The White House has been forced on to the back foot after the former general went from denying discussing sanctions with the Russian ambassador to Washington to saying he could not recall if the issue was addressed in conversations.

The Washington Post reported last week that US officials were concerned that Mr.Flynn might have been signalling to the Kremlin that the Trump administration would adopt a softer stance on Russia than the Obama administration. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is probing the issue to determine what the two men discussed.

The White House is facing mounting pressure to explain the relationship between President Donald Trump and the Kremlin, after Michael Flynn was fired as national security adviser following claims that he may have illegally discussed sanctions with Russia's ambassador to Washington.

The abrupt ousting of Mr Flynn after 24 days in the White House role has intensified the focus on the Trump administration's ties to Russia and made it impossible for the White House to convince sceptics that all is smooth inside the West Wing.

Mr Flynn was fired on Monday as scrutiny mounted into claims that he discussed US sanctions against Russia in calls with the Russian ambassador before Mr.Trump's inauguration—a possible breach of a 1799 law—and then misled Mike Pence, vice-president, about the calls.US media reported that the justice department had warned the White House weeks ago that this made Mr.Flynn susceptible to blackmail.

The Trump administration's ties to Russia are the subject of separate investigations by the FBI and the House and Senate intelligence committees.“This is just one more reason to keep digging,” said a former FBI official.

During a White House news conference and a Twitter barrage yesterday, Mr.Trump blamed the escalating crisis that forced this week's departure of Michael Flynn, his national security adviser, on a conspiracy fuelled by a media driven by “blind hatred” and intelligence agencies seeking revenge.

During the news conference, he called the leaking of the information—which included in reports by CNN and the New York Times that Mr.Flynn and other Trump aides were in regular contact with Russian intelligence during the 2016 campaign—“a criminal act”.

“People are trying to cover up for a terrible loss that the Democrats had under Hillary Clinton,” he said.

Intelligence agencies concluded Russia intervened in the presidential race in an attempt to undermine Mrs.Clinton.But evidence that the Kremlin colluded with Mr.Trump's campaign would take those allegations to a new level. The Kremlin denied having any contacts, calling them “l(fā)aughable allusions”.

Despite the sacking, Mr.Trump called Mr.Flynn “a wonderful man” who had been “treated so unfairly” by the media.

The circumstances surrounding Mr.Flynn's dismissal have quickly grown into a wider scandal about Mr.Trump's connections to Russia.

Michael Flynn did nothing wrong by discussing US sanctions with the Russian ambassador before the inauguration, President Donald Trump told a combative press conference just three days after he fired his national security adviser.

In a long, theatrical news conference that included off-the-cuff remarks about whether he should “shoot” a Russian spy ship off the US coast, Mr.Trump said he fired Mr.Flynn because he had misled Mike Pence, the vice-president, about his conversations with the Russian envoy rather than because the retired general had taken actions that may have been illegal.

“Mike was doing his job.He was calling countries and his counterparts. So it would certainly have been OK with me if he did it,” Mr.Trump said when asked if he told Mr.Flynn to discuss sanctions.“I would have directed him to do it if I thought he wasn't doing it.I didn't direct him but I would have directed him because that's his job.”

Mr.Trump said he wanted to improve US relations with Russia—and pointed out the danger of a “nuclear holocaust” to underscore the need for better ties between the two nuclear powers—as he blamed the media for complicating efforts to deal with Vladimir Putin, the Russian president whom he repeatedly refused to criticise.

“I want to just tell you, the false reporting by the media, by you people, the false, horrible, fake reporting makes it much harder to make a deal with Russia,” Mr.Trump told reporters at the White House.
