lose face丟臉,受侮辱
該短語源于漢語的“丟臉”,據(jù)說是一些近代在中國經(jīng)商的英國人介紹到英語在中的,此后他們又創(chuàng)造了一次寫類似的成語:save the face(保全面子),a loss of face(丟面子),face-saving(失面子的)。例如:The last thing I want to see is to lose face before my friends.(我最不想見到自己在朋友面前丟臉。)

the die is cast事已定局;事已至此,無可反悔
成語中的die是指骰子。在擲骰子賭博時,通常擲出去(cast)的最后點數(shù)都是一定的。并不會再有所變動,因此不論主觀的意志為何,一樣是直接按點數(shù)論輸贏,沒有爭論的余地。
據(jù)說凱撒大帝(uius Caesar)在率軍渡過魯比孔河(Rubican)要與龐貝決一死戰(zhàn)時,便用了the die is cast表示“心意已決,沒有更改的余地”。the die is cast也可以寫做the die is thrown,意思不變。
