第三十九課 林鼠

Do you know the little wood-mouse,

你知道小林鼠嗎？

That pretty little thing

那個(gè)非常小的東西

That sits among the forest leaves,

它坐在森林樹(shù)葉之間，

Beside the forest spring?

就在森林泉水的附近。

Its fur is as red as the chestnut,

它的毛像栗子一樣紅，

And it is small and slim;

又小又細(xì)；

It leads a life most innocent

它過(guò)著最天真的生活

Within the forest dim.

在森林的幽暗處。

'Tis a timid,gentle creature,

它是個(gè)膽小溫和的生物，

And seldom comes in sight;

很少進(jìn)入人的視野；

It has a long and wiry tail,

它長(zhǎng)著細(xì)長(zhǎng)結(jié)實(shí)的尾巴，

And eyes both black and bright.

眼睛又黑又亮。

It makes its nest of soft dry moss,

它以柔軟的干苔筑巢，

In a hole so deep and strong;

在一個(gè)又深又堅(jiān)固的洞里；

And there it sleeps secure and warm,

在那兒它安全溫暖地睡覺(jué)，

The dreary winter long.

度過(guò)枯燥漫長(zhǎng)的冬天。

And though it keeps no almanac,

雖然它不懂日歷，

It knows when flowers are springing;

但它知道春天花會(huì)開(kāi)；

And waketh to its summer life

夏天的時(shí)候醒來(lái)，

When nightingales are singing.

就是當(dāng)夜鶯高歌的時(shí)候。

Upon the boughs the squirrel sits,

松鼠坐在大樹(shù)枝上，

The wood-mouse plays below;

林鼠在下面玩耍；

And plenty of food it finds itself

它給自己找到很多食物

Where the beech and chestnut grow.

就是從長(zhǎng)山毛櫸和栗子的地方。

In the hedge-sparrow's nest it sits,

它坐在籬雀的窩里，

When its summer brood is fled,

因?yàn)橄奶斓哪且桓C飛走了，

And picks the berries from the bough

它從大樹(shù)枝上摘梅子，

Of the hawthorn overhead.

頭上頂著的是山楂。

I saw a little wood-mouse once,

我曾見(jiàn)過(guò)一次林鼠，

Like Oberon in his hall,

就像在殿里的奧伯龍，

With the green green moss beneath his feet,

其腳下踏著綠綠的青苔，

Sit under a mushroom tall.

坐在一個(gè)高高的蘑菇下。

I saw him sit, and his dinner eat,

我看見(jiàn)他坐在那兒吃他的晚餐，

All under the forest tree;

就在森林的樹(shù)下；

His dinner of chestnut ripe and red,

And he ate it heartily.

I wish you could have seen him there!

It did my spirit good,

To see the small thing God had made

Thus eating in the wood.

I saw that He regardeth them—

Those creatures weak and small;

Their table in the wild is spread
