所選用的介詞與先行詞構(gòu)成固定搭配。比如：at the rate，in the direction，to the extent，to the degree，at the temperature，with ease，by the means等。
先看兩個簡單句：
About a thousand species of animals are in danger of extinction. They are being destroyed at this rate and the rate has increased.
約有1,000種動物瀕臨滅絕。它們目前正在 以這樣的速度 遭到殘害，而且 這個速度 還在加快。
我們現(xiàn)在要明確說是什么速度在增加：the rate（接定語） has increased，所以用they are being destroyed at this rate 作定語修飾the rate。我們便得到：
