We’ve a way of saying “That seems possible.’ It usually means that the speaker feel something is logical or easy to understand. Guess what it is. Let’s listen to the following mini situational dialogue to get the answer.
(Scene:It happens between two co-workers.)
Mary:It’s really difficult when a family member is sick.
John:I can imagine. You must be worried about your mother.
Have you got the answer? It is “I can imagine.” The Chinese for it is “是啊,我理解。” or “我知道。If sb burdens his mind to you, this word can play his role to console him or her. ” Let’s look at the sentence structures about this word:
1.I can imagine + N. (A noun can be put after the verb——imagine.)
2.I can imagine ( that ) + S + V( An objective clause which is introduced by “that” can be put after the verb——imagine. )
Let’s take a look at two examples:
1.I canimagine it must have been like a nightmare.
Tip:Nightmaremeans “a dream that is very frightening or unpleasant”.
2.I can imagine that she’s excited about getting married.
Tip: “To be excited about something” means “ feeling or showing happiness and enthusiasm”. For example:
1.The new restaurant is nothing to get excited about.
2.Don't get too excited by the sight of your name in print.
What’s more, another situational dialogue, let’s have a look at:
Tim:Sorry about the mess. It’s been busy lately.
Rose:I can imagine.
Tip:“To be sorry about” means “full of shame because of something bad ”. For example: Aren't you sorry for what you've done?

Thesuggestive answersare as follows:
1. Mary’s mother is sick.
2. He says he can imagine how difficult it is when a family member is sick.
3. Because his room is in a mess.
4.Because Tim has been busy recently and have no time to clean up his room.

Today we’ve learnt one short sentence used in spoken English——I can imagine. By the way, we’ve learned two set phrases: to be excite about something & to be sorry for something. Both “about” and “for”are used to introduce a cause.
