I've never met a person who was not successful, that didn't have a great amount of self-discipline within their life, self-discipline and being able to perform and being able to keep your life on schedule, and being able to keep commitments and promises and meet deadlines, is essential to success.
I learned many years ago that there are two kinds of people, there's the type of person who says, I'm gonna wait till I feel like it before I do it, and then there's a person who says I've got to do it, so that I feel like it. One will never get anything done, because they're sterile waiting to feel the moment to move, and the other person says no, I need to move, and then I will begin to feel the moment, the self discipline is essential in your life and in my life, if we're going to get things done.
I can tell you right now if you talk to me, and I was going I was into football, and I was a football player, and then you would have told me, I'll be doing what I'm doing, I would have said no you're crazy leave me alone, get out of here. This is why life is, you can't predict what you're supposed to do, and I tell people, never kill yourself, never.
Because you don't know what your future is, you just don't, and that's the thing, it's like for me I never would have thought I would be doing this, but I decided to try things. I just decided that I didn't have to do what everyone else said I needed to do, it's like you know when you're a football player, everyone tells you this would be the best route to do after you're done. Well I decided to go another way, and people thought I would fail. I remember when I moved to LA, and everybody said, what are you doing? You know you are an old football player, that's not, they don't care.
And I was hard, I was actually doing security for a little while, and you know, we went broke for a while, and but the amazing thing though, is that as I just kept trying new things, new doors kept opening, and I never thought I would be an actor, but here I am.
Most people's dreams have been flushed down the toilet like a decade ago, it didn't happen, they watch television and they sleep and then they drink on the weekend, okay, and that's most people's life. Now at a certain point, what you have to do is you have to look at your life, and you have to say, do I accept this, or do I not accept it, okay, you have to look at that, and you have to make a decision. So look at your life, now ask yourself, what direction is my life going in, like if I look at what I'm doing right now, what direction is this gonna lead me in?
How do you do it, one, obsess about what you want, right? Focus on it continuously, have so much emotion about it, that you take massive action, keep changing your approach, model somebody really great, and then with some grace, take some grace, too. Yeah some call it luck, some call it God.
Because I think when we look at the people who you know achieve greatness, they weren't just kind of half-ass it, you know they were really into mastery of service, you know they wanted to create the best business, and they obsessed about it, they wanted to create raving fans because they obsessed about the service aspect of it, they were out to make a great difference in the world and do it with excellence.
In life it's a very simple principle but all success comes from completing tasks. It's not from working at tasks it's from completing tasks, it is only when you complete tasks that you are successful.
