In the second day of the voyage, they came to the Highlands.

旅途第二天，他們抵達(dá)蘇格蘭高地。

It was the latter part of a calm, sultry day, that they floated gently with the tide between these stern mountains.

當(dāng)時(shí)天近傍晚，無(wú)風(fēng)、悶熱。船兒順流輕輕漂流，兩岸森嚴(yán)的崇山峻嶺綿亙延伸。

There was that perfect quiet which prevails over nature in the languor of summer heat.

天地陷入濃重的靜謐。夏日無(wú)精打采，似乎耗盡了最后一縷炎熱。

The turning of a plank, or the accidental falling of an oar, on deck, was echoed from the mountain side and reverberated along the shores;

船舷時(shí)而偏轉(zhuǎn)，甲板上木漿偶然落水，哪怕一點(diǎn)細(xì)微聲音，撞擊山體后旋即沿山澗兩岸依次蕩開(kāi)。

and, if by chance the captain gave a shout of command, there were airy tongues that mocked it from every cliff.

如果碰巧船長(zhǎng)扯開(kāi)嗓子吆喝一聲，四周峭壁很快炸響一連串滾動(dòng)訇然。

Dolph gazed about him, in mute delight and wonder, at these scenes of nature's magnificence.

道爾夫出神地看著周遭如同淹沒(méi)在遠(yuǎn)古洪荒中的自然奇觀(guān)，內(nèi)心滿(mǎn)是無(wú)言的快樂(lè)，還有好奇。

To the left, the Dunderberg reared its woody precipices, height over height, forest over forest, away into the deep summer sky.

從左舷看，此刻，“鄧德伯格號(hào)”船高豎前舷，徑直沖過(guò)層層前方陡峭，飛快掠過(guò)兩岸濃密叢林，進(jìn)入更為幽深的夏日空寂。

To the right, strutted forth the bold promontory of Antony's Nose, with a solitary eagle wheeling about it;

從右舷看，舷體凸出一塊木牌，外形有點(diǎn)像安東尼的粗碩鼻子，木牌上刻有一只孤獨(dú)的鷹，那只鷹正在快速不停地旋轉(zhuǎn)。

while beyond, mountain succeeded to mountain, until they seemed to lock their arms together and confine this mighty rive in their embraces.

放眼望去，只見(jiàn)沿岸山巒疊嶂不斷后退，最后，好像山窮水復(fù)疑無(wú)路，群峰兀立，頭頂上唯有一道狹長(zhǎng)藍(lán)天。

In the midst of this admiration, Dolph remarked a pile of bright, snowy clouds peering above the western heights.

道爾夫忙著觀(guān)幽探奇，突然看到一簇明晃晃的銀色云團(tuán)，在西方天際若隱若現(xiàn)，

It was succeeded by another, and another, each seemingly pushing onward its predecessor, and towering, with dazzling brilliancy, in the deep blue atmosphere;

隨后，又飄過(guò)來(lái)一簇云團(tuán)，又涌來(lái)一團(tuán)，不斷疊現(xiàn)翻滾的云團(tuán)逐次相推，直沖九天云漢，亦愈發(fā)炫目耀眼，背景天空現(xiàn)出陰晦的深藍(lán)。

and now muttering peals of thunder were faintly heard rolling behind the mountains.

倏爾，沉悶的雷聲依稀裹雜響起，從山那邊滾翻冒出。

The river, hitherto still and glassy, reflecting pictures of the sky and land,

河水，恍然不知，一如既往地嫻靜；滿(mǎn)目山川景色，在澄明如鏡的一襲水面現(xiàn)出清晰倒影。

now showed a dark ripple at a distance, as the wind came creeping up it.

很快，似乎聞到風(fēng)的潛行氣息，遠(yuǎn)處水域翻起黑色波浪。

The fishhawks wheeled and screamed, and sought their nests on the high, dry trees;

水面上，魚(yú)鷹急速地盤(pán)旋尖叫，到處尋覓筑在山崖枯樹(shù)上的鳥(niǎo)巢；

the crows flew clamorously to the crevices of the rocks; and all nature seemed conscious of the approaching thunder gust.

烏鴉鼓噪地飛向峭崖絕壁的石隙里；自然萬(wàn)物無(wú)不驚悚，一場(chǎng)暴風(fēng)雨頃刻來(lái)臨。
