The poor man was immediately released from confinement, his accounts returned, and the mistake pointed out.

倒霉的稅務(wù)官很快從監(jiān)獄里釋放出來(lái)，他的賬目亦已返還，他的錯(cuò)誤自然得到糾正。

During his imprisonment, which lasted two days, he had neither eaten, drunk, nor taken any repose;

前后兩天關(guān)押期間，他不吃、不喝，甚至沒(méi)打過(guò)一個(gè)盹。

and when he appeared, his countenance was as pale as death.

從監(jiān)獄釋放出來(lái)后，康拉德面如死灰。

On receiving his accounts, he was a long time silent;

拿到他的賬本后，他長(zhǎng)時(shí)間保持沉默；

then suddenly awaking, as if from a trance, he repeated, "Once one is two."

突然間，他似乎從恍惚中蘇醒過(guò)來(lái)，嘴里依然振振有詞，“一一得二。”

He appeared to be entirely insensible of his situation; would neither eat nor drink, unless solicited; and took notice of nothing that passed around him.

While repeating his accustomed phrase, if anyone corrected him by saying, "Once one is one," his attention was arrested for a moment, and he said, "Ah, right, once one is one;"

只是不停地念叨那句話。如果有人試圖糾正他，告訴他“一一得一”，他留心片刻，隨即改口說(shuō)，“哦，不錯(cuò)，一一得一。”

and then resuming his walk, he continued to repeat, "Once one is two."

He died shortly after the traveler left Berlin.

那位旅游者離開(kāi)柏林不久，康拉德，死了。

This affecting story, whether true or untrue, obviously abounds with lessons of instruction.

這故事無(wú)論真假，讓人唏噓不已，故事蘊(yùn)涵深刻，不乏指導(dǎo)意義。

Alas! how easily is the human mind thrown off its balance;

唉，人心如此容易失衡，

especially when it is stayed on this world only, and has no experimental knowledge of the meaning of the injunction of SCRIpture, to cast all our cares upon Him who careth for us, and who heareth even the young ravens when they cry.

尤其當(dāng)今世道，完全不再具備《圣經(jīng)》里警示訓(xùn)誡做人的基本常識(shí)。將人類所有憂慮不安寄予上帝，她對(duì)眾生心懷悲憫；哪怕一只雛鴉嘶鳴哭泣，那萬(wàn)能的主亦能聽(tīng)見(jiàn)。
