When recess was over, and the rest of the boys returned, fresh and vigorous, to their studies,

George might be seen lagging and moping along to his seat.

Sometimes he would be asleep in school;

sometimes he would pass his time in catching flies, and penning them up in little holes, which he cut in his seat;

有時(shí)候他會(huì)用抓蒼蠅來(lái)打發(fā)時(shí)間，然后把它們關(guān)在他在椅子上刻出的小洞里。

and sometimes, when the preceptor's back was turned, he would throw a paper ball across the room.

還有些時(shí)候，當(dāng)老師轉(zhuǎn)過(guò)身去，他會(huì)把一個(gè)紙團(tuán)扔到教室的另一邊。

When the class was called up to recite,

當(dāng)老師叫同學(xué)們背誦時(shí)，

George would come drowsily along, looking as mean and ashamed as though he were going to be whipped.

喬治總是迷迷糊糊地跟著，看上去非常差勁，令人慚愧，仿佛要挨鞭子似的。

The rest of the class stepped up to the recitation with alaCRIty, and appeared happy and contented.

When it came George's turn to recite, he would be so long in doing it,

當(dāng)輪到喬治背誦時(shí)，他要花上很長(zhǎng)時(shí)間，

and make such blunders, that all most heartily wished him out of the class.

犯很多錯(cuò)，以至于所有人都由衷地希望把他趕出教室。

At last, George went with his class to enter college.

最終，喬治和他的同學(xué)們一起進(jìn)入了大學(xué)。

Though he passed a very poor examination, he was admitted with the rest;

盡管他的考試成績(jī)很差，但他也和其他同學(xué)一起被錄取了。

for those who examined him thought it was possible that the reason why he did not answer questions better was because he was frightened.

原因是那個(gè)考察他的老師認(rèn)為，他沒(méi)回答好問(wèn)題可能是因?yàn)樗ε?，太緊張了。

Now came hard times for poor George.

現(xiàn)在，可憐的喬治的艱難時(shí)刻來(lái)臨了。

In college there is not much mercy shown to bad scholars;

大學(xué)里對(duì)于差學(xué)生可沒(méi)那么仁慈了。

and George had neglected his studies so long that he could not now keep up with his class, let him try ever so hard.

喬治放松學(xué)習(xí)的時(shí)間太長(zhǎng)，所以他已經(jīng)跟不上上課進(jìn)度了，讓他更努力地試試吧。
