"Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" could prove that the third time really is the charm by expanding on an already sizable, popular franchise. This time out, Manny (Ray Romano) is so busy attending to Ellie (Queen Latifah), his very pregnant mate, that he lacks sufficient time and energy to deal with the personal crises of two other returning "herd" members: Diego (Denis Leary), the saber-toothed tiger and Sid (John Leguizamo), the rambunctiously goofy sloth. Sid adopts three baby dinosaurs hatched from eggs he's found. The trouble begins when Mommy Dino emerges from an underground realm to retrieve her offspring. She also takes Sid back down with her, causing Manny and the rest of the "herd" to follow. Director Carlos Saldanha adds a new character called Buck, a swashbuckling weasel voiced with aptly madcap brio by Simon Pegg. Locked in an ongoing life-or-death struggle with a humongous albino dinosaur, Buck is more than just a tad mad. But that makes him all the more fun to watch. "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" impresses with vibrant CGI imagery and animation by the wizards at Blue Sky Studios. The addition of 3-D adds even more depth and detail to the mix, allowing the audience to enjoy the amusing illusion of snouts, paw, claws and beaks extending off the screen.
