Lucy gets off, or leaves the bus, and walks a "half a block to the building where" she works. 露西下車，或離開公共汽車，走了“半個街區(qū)到”她“工作的地方”。

A block, "block," is the area between two streets. 街區(qū)(block)，是兩個街道之間的區(qū)域。

In most American cities, the blocks are square, so you have two streets on both sides and that whole thing is called a block. 在美國的大多數(shù)城市，街區(qū)都是方形的，所以兩邊都有兩條街，整體叫做一個街區(qū)。

The block that I live on is not square; it's a very strange, unusual shape, but most cities have blocks that are square. 我住的街區(qū)不是方形的，是一種非常奇怪、不尋常的形狀，但大多數(shù)城市里街區(qū)都是方形的。

We also use that expression when we are talking about distance. 談?wù)摼嚯x的時候，我們也用這個表達。

Someone may say, "How many blocks is it to the train station?" 有人可能會問:“到火車站有幾個街區(qū)?”

You could say, "It is four blocks from here," meaning you have to walk four streets to get there. 你可以說:“離這里有四個街區(qū)。”也就是你必須走四條街才能到那里。

Lucy says that she has "a long commute, but" she looks "around every morning", 露西說她的“通勤時間很長”，但是她“每天早上都環(huán)顧四周”，

she looks at the other people, and she sees that she is "not the only one who has to do it," meaning there are many people who have to commute a long distance. 她看著其他人，她看到“并不是只有”她“自己需要這么長時間”，這意味著有很多人需要走很遠才能到工作單位。

Some companies now allow their employees to telecommute. 一些公司現(xiàn)在允許員工遠程辦公。

Telecommute, "telecommute," (one word) means that you work at home but you call the office to talk to people. 遠程辦公，(telecommute)是指在家里工作，但需要打電話給辦公室與人交流。
