一般來說，在一些特定的詞語引導(dǎo)的從句中都要用帶should的虛擬語氣。不過，在美國英語里，should是可省掉的。比如，凡是由suggest, request, order, demand, propose, desire, command, insist等及物動(dòng)詞所帶的賓語從句，其謂語部分的should可以省。例如：I suggest that we (should) hold a meeting next week.

凡是由"It is (was) requested（ordered, suggested, desired, decided等）that..."引導(dǎo)的名詞性主語從句中，其謂語部分的should可以省略。例如：It is requested that the cloth (should) be woven at once./It is desired that the bridge (should) be built in two years.

　　在使用虛擬語氣的句子中，如果用if會(huì)引起歧義時(shí)，就只用whether。比如：Could you tell me if you know the answer?這句話有兩種意思："你能告訴我是否知道答案嗎？"或"如果你知道答案，請(qǐng)告訴我，好嗎？"所以，需要用whether才能避免歧義。
