634　stand for，stand up for和stand by

① stand for可以表示兩種意思。

（1）表示“支持（某事物）”，含有贊成的意思，后可跟名詞或what從句。

They stand for the just cause. 他們支持那項(xiàng)正義事業(yè)。

He always stands for what is right. 他一貫支持正確的事情。

（2）表示“代表，象征”，后跟名詞。

The five-star red flag stands for our country. 五星紅旗代表我們的國(guó)家。

What does the flower stand for？這種花象征著什么？

② stand up for表示“替……說(shuō)話，（在道義上或口頭上）捍衛(wèi)”。

He stood up for his brother. 他替他弟弟說(shuō)話。

They will be able to stand up for freedom. 他們能夠捍衛(wèi)自由。

③ stand by表示“站在旁邊，和……站在一起，遵守”。
