272　farther和further

① farther和further都是far的比較級，意為“更遠(yuǎn)，較遠(yuǎn)”，表示距離、方向、時間時，farther和further是可以換用的，可作形容詞或副詞。

The farther/further hill is about fifty miles away. 那座更遠(yuǎn)的山在大約50英里以外。

Shanghai is farther/further away than Suzhou from here. 上海離這里比蘇州遠(yuǎn)。

He walked farther/further than I had expected. 他走得比我預(yù)料的遠(yuǎn)。

If you go farther/further，you'll see the teaching building. 你要是再往前走，就可以看到教學(xué)大樓了。

② further還可以表示“額外的，更進一步的/地”等意思，而farther則不可以。

No further sound came from the room. 再也沒有聲音從房間里傳來。

Have you any further questions to ask？你有進一步的問題要問嗎？

I'll say further that it has nothing to do with me. 我還要進一步說明，這件事與我無關(guān)。
